Last Minute Father’s Day Gifts

9 Jun

Hello All and Happy Monday!

If you haven’t left your house in the last couple of weeks you may not have noticed the ubiquitous signage enticing you to empty your wallets for dear ol’ Dad on his day coming up on June 15th.  Have no fear if you haven’t had a chance to find the Dad’s in your life something special you still have time.  We have compiled a list of some of the best Father’s Day gifts for both under $50 and over $50 and we reviewed them for you as well.  You can find most of these at your local mall but if you’re as busy as we are you might even want to have them shipped to your house.  Also since most packages that arrive tend to be for the women of the house you won’t have to worry about Dad opening them and ruining the surprise!  So without further ado, pomp and circumstance we give you the First Annual Home Sweet Sunshine Father’s Day Gift Guide (FAHSSFDGG for you acronym lovers).

*** Please note that the prices listed on this page are as of the date of publication and many are discounted for Father’s Day so they may change after Father’s Day

Black & Decker Rechargeable Handheld Screwdriver$29.97
This tool is a lifesaver around the house, and a time saver for any of the little tasks that require Dad’s special skillset.  It is not meant for big projects but it is the perfect size to fit in a drawer, plus it keeps its charge for weeks in our experience so it will be ready to go when it is needed.  It is even better if you have other tools in the Versapak family as the batteries are interchangeable.  Definitely a must have for any home.

Belkin WeMo Switch – Control Electronics from Anywhere – $39.99
This gadget is perfect for the techie-Dad in your family.  You need to have a smartphone to make it work and download the free app but basically it allows you to remotely turn on or off anything that you connect to an electrical outlet.  You can use it from a different room in your house or from a different country.  We use one for a lamp in our living room and another for a lamp in our bedroom.  If we find that we are running a little late getting home and do not want the house to be completely dark we use the app to turn it on.  This gives us a sense of security while we are away and also when we are entering the house.  We use another for the wall mounted A/C in Sheika’s room.  Since the temperature in Miami can often go from hot and steamy to overcast and cool in a matter of minutes we are able to turn off her A/C if we notice from our Weather Channel App that it is raining over our house.  I think that in this use alone the device has paid for itself in energy savings.

Swanson Tool 12-Inch Speed Square – $19.98
It is hard to exaggerate the usefulness of this tool.  We use it on basically every home project that we work on.  As the name states it is built for speed, allowing you to quickly and accurately gauge right angles and is particularly useful for lining up and measuring wood cuts.  We originally had a sliding T-Square that is also a must have because it can measure any angle but since the majory of cuts are at right angles this tool simplifies the process.  When Josh was repairing the fascia board on our house one of his friends brought his Speed Square over to help and it was love at first sight for Josh and now he says he cannot live without it…much like he cannot live without beer and football.

Electronic Closet Tie Rack by Necktie Accessories $29.95
You wouldn’t have Thanksgiving without turkey so we had to have something to do with neckties for this Father’s Day list.  Well since the beginning of time (until this blog post remotely activated your coolness meter) the world has been giving Dad neckties for his day.  Well…you guessed it…now he has a place where he can actually put all of those ill-conceived gifts instead of hanging them all on a hanger and only ever using the few ties at the top of the pile. This device fits into almost any closet and works like a charm for up to 70 ties and even 4 belts!  So not only are you helping Dad access years worth of treasured colored cloth you are also keeping Mom happy by making sure the house is organized neatly.  And with 70 slots for ties you can go back to giving him ties next year!

Pebble SmartWatch for iPhone and Android – $149.99
Ok now this is one of the coolest things ever and is not only stylish but also highly functional.  Basically this watch syncs with your smartphone and allows you to see a wide variety of notifications from your phone such as text messages, emails, alarms, reminders and a variety of other functions.  It also vibrates so that you can silently check a message during a meeting without anyone being aware.  It also has fitness apps that you can download that will enable you to track distance and other data on your workout.  You can set your morning alarm so that you do not disturb your partner or anyone else in the house.  You can even download custom watch faces so you have a different face for different situations.  This model by Pebble is one of the best but there are others that have different functions and features such as a color display.  Make sure you do your research on this one because it isn’t cheap but it is probably one of the coolest things you can get for the modern man (they also have them for women)

Sony BDV-E3100 5.1 Channel 3D Blu-ray Disc Home Theater System with Built-In Wi-Fi – $298.00
Much in the way that fish need to be in water, no man can live without surround sound for very long.  Once it has been experienced everything else just feels sad, uninspired and pedestrian.  A few other adjectives to describe life without surround sound: boring, melancholy, staid, depressing, crapfest and zzzzzz.  Whether it be for movies, sports or music a good surround sound system will take the entertainment experience to the next level.  And it is a gift that can be given to Dad but still enjoyed by the entire family.  We have had a couple different systems throughout life but have settled on Sony as the best on the market.  Both of us had Sony systems when we met and since Jany’s was older we use mine in the main living room and hers in the office.  But even though hers is older it still puts out the same quality sound that it always has.  This one comes with a Blue-ray disc player that is an added bonus and even has Built-In Wi-Fi that allows you to stream movies from Netflix, Pandora, Hulu Plus and more.  This is the most expensive item on our list but it is also sure to get the biggest smile!

Hitachi C10FCE2 10-Inch Compound Miter Saw $99.97
Oh yeah now we’re talking!  In terms of pure awesomeness there is very little that can compete with major electric power tools (except of course gas power tools).  And in terms of usefulness not much can compete with a good Miter saw.  The great thing about this tool is that it is portable and it cuts your work time in half (bad pun intended).  Additionally, it allows you to make very precise cuts and can even cut miters  (hence the name) and bevels for fascia board, crown molding and other types of trim.  The same guy who showed me the Speed Square brought over his Miter Saw and again it was love at first sight.  I had been cutting wood with a circular saw like a caveman.  We still have not purchased one and since I am not technically a father I won’t be getting one next weekend.  But maybe Sheika and Mr. Cat can pool their funds and make their old man happy!

So there you have our best suggestions for last minute Father’s Day gifts, we hope they helped and even if you don’t get them for Father’s Day they are generally great gifts for any man (and many women).  So don’t forget Christmas is coming up around the corner if you want to give me a gift for entertaining you all year with my enlightening rants.  Have a great Father’s Day everyone!
